Pre-match preview

Sunderland

Sunderland's first fixture in European competition is expected to bring few changes. Régis Le Bris has indicated that changes from the side that faced Arsenal will be kept to a minimum, and the group trained together on 15 September with only the injured Habib Diarra and Romaine Mundle absent. The Black Cats have used the same 4-2-3-1 shape in each of their last four matches. Nordi Mukiele and Trai Hume are the candidates at right-back.

Granit Xhaka has started all four games in that spell and is set to anchor midfield again alongside Noah Sadiki. Further forward, Nilson Angulo started all four but was substituted every time, never playing beyond the 70th minute.

AZ

Kees Smit is back in contention after two matches out, with head coach Leeroy Echteld confirming this week that the midfielder is fit to return. Smit and Dave Kwakman are competing for the place behind the front line.

Further forward, Calvin Stengs made his first start of the last five matches at home to Willem II and is in contention with Ro-Zangelo Daal for a place on the right. Weslley Patati had started the previous four matches in that position but was substituted each time and came off the bench against Willem II.
