Pre-match preview

Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone must replace Morten Hjulmand after the midfielder was sent off against Stuttgart in Atlético's previous Champions League fixture. Koke's return to group training comes at an important moment, although the captain has missed five games with a muscle injury. Johnny Cardoso remains on an individual programme and is not expected to feature. Pablo Barrios should therefore have a new partner in central midfield.

There is also a decision to make in defence. Cristian Romero was an unused substitute against Levante but did not train with the group on Monday, making Marc Pubill and Dávid Hancko the likely centre-back pairing. Marcos Llorente and Alejandro Grimaldo should retain the full-back positions.

Giuliano Simeone scored in the 2-0 win over Levante and is pushing to start on the right. Julián Álvarez is expected to lead the attack, with Jonathan David and Ademola Lookman competing to join him. The hosts will need disciplined midfield positioning against Bayern's movement around Harry Kane.

Bayern Munich

Bayern's attacking options have narrowed sharply following Saturday's 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund. Serge Gnabry suffered a thigh injury, while Ismael Saibari required surgery after damaging the syndesmosis ligament in his ankle. Jamal Musiala and Luis Díaz were already sidelined. Assistant coach Aaron Danks will again lead the team while Vincent Kompany is absent through illness.

Michael Olise was also substituted against Dortmund, this time with a knee problem, but joined Monday's group training. He remains a possible starter on the right, with Lennart Karl ready to step in if required. Alphonso Davies could be used higher up the left flank, allowing Josip Stanišić to start in defence. Tom Bischof is an option behind Harry Kane, while Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović can provide the central midfield base. Manuel Neuer also trained after missing games with a foot injury. Jonas Urbig has started Bayern's last three matches, so the goalkeeping decision remains open until the final team news.
