Borussia Dortmund

Fábio Silva's late equaliser rescued a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich and underlined the options Niko Kovač has in attack. Dortmund used a back four in that match, but their recent Champions League win over Sabah and home victory against Frankfurt came with three centre-backs. A return to that shape is plausible, with Ramy Bensebaïni and Joane Gadou competing for a defensive place.

Joey Veerman and Felix Nmecha are expected in central midfield, with Daniel Svensson on the left and Julian Ryerson on the right. Veerman provided the assist for Serhou Guirassy's second goal against Sabah, while Guirassy also scored against Bayern. Silva is pushing to start close to Guirassy after his impact in Munich. Carney Chukwuemeka, Marcel Sabitzer and Maximilian Beier provide different ways to fill the spaces behind the striker. Emre Can, Giannis Konstantelias and Justin Lerma have been absent with injuries, leaving Kovač with fewer options in those areas.

Real Betis

Álvaro Fidalgo has been ruled out of Real Betis's trip to Dortmund after illness prevented him from travelling on Tuesday. Cucho Hernández and Junior Firpo are also absent, while Iker Losada has again been left out by Manuel Pellegrini. Facundo Bernal, however, has made the squad: his domestic suspension does not prevent him from playing in Europe.

Betis arrive after a 2-1 league victory over Málaga, with goals from Marc Bartra and Pablo Fornals. Their Champions League win against Feyenoord featured Álvaro Vallés behind Héctor Bellerín, Bartra, Natan and Fran García. Diego Llorente is pushing for a starting place in central defence, having also featured recently. Antony came off the bench against Málaga and is a candidate to return on the right. Isco and Abde Ezzalzouli offer creativity around Troy Parrott, who remains the main striking option in Hernández's absence. Marc Roca and Fornals look likely to start in midfield, although Dani Ceballos and Bernal give Pellegrini alternatives.
