Aston Villa

Ian Maatsen will again be missing for the Villans against Brentford, with his ankle injury expected to keep him out until the end of October. Matteo Ruggeri made his first start in the last five matches at left-back against Tottenham Hotspur and is expected to continue in that role.

Leon Goretzka remains sidelined too and will not be involved against Brentford. Pau Torres is expected to be available after returning from injury and featuring in a friendly against Sevilla, leaving a choice between him and Tyrone Mings in central defence. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Matty Cash are also competing for the right-back position.

Further forward, Modou Cissé remains out with a knock, though he is expected to rejoin training next week. Alejandro Garnacho is improving but still needs to build his fitness and power and adapt tactically.

Brentford

Nathan Collins is doubtful with a calf injury, with Jannik Schuster expected to continue alongside Kristoffer Ajer at centre-back if Collins is unavailable. Mikkel Damsgaard is awaiting an assessment after an ankle injury led him to leave Denmark's squad, while Dango Ouattara is also doubtful through illness for Brentford's trip to Aston Villa.

Keith Andrews's side have lost none of their last five league matches, winning two and drawing three, and sit fourth in the table with nine points after five games.
